Skidt nyt for HD DVD;
HD-DVD movies: not coming soon
Posted Mar 14th 2006 9:36AM by Marc Perton
Filed under: HDTV, Home Entertainment
If you've already pre-ordered some HD-DVD videos for that HD-DVD player
that you also pre-ordered, you may end up getting the deck before you
get the flicks. Warner Home Video -- the only studio that had set a
firm date for a rollout of HD-DVD movies -- has now backed off and
won't commit to a specific timetable. The company had originally
planned to launch a slate of films including "Batman Begins" and
"Million Dollar Baby" on March 28, and had even allowed major retailers
such as Wal-Mart and Best Buy to take pre-orders. However, division
head Ron Sanders now says "the outlook is tenuous -- we're still coming
out with an initial slate, but we may be a week or two later; we just
don't know." That can't be good news for Toshiba, which has been
promoting its new HD-DVD players with a national roadshow, and still
plans to have players in stores by the end of the month -- whether or
not there's anything to watch on them.

Nyt, måske er krigen forbi allerede!
Ultra-Multi: the new platform for HD discs?
Posted Mar 14th 2006 11:36AM by Marc Perton
Filed under: HDTV, Home Entertainment
There aren't a lot of details out yet, but apparently, the buzz at
CeBIT has turned to a new HD disc player called the "Ultra-Multi,"
which will be a hybrid unit capable or playing both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray
discs. There's no word on who might manufacture this -- though LG has
already said it plans a hybrid device -- but just the mention of plans
for such a player will no doubt cause some sweaty palms at Toshiba
(which is shipping its first HD-DVD players later this month), where
this morning's announcement that Warner Home Video would be delaying
its first HD-DVD releases is probably just beginning to sink in.

Hmm; Igen fra endgadget.com
If you're one of those few people who rushed out and bought an analog
HD display (like the 1993 model pictured above), you may actually be
able to find some use for it. Sony Pictures has announced that it won't
downsample Blu-ray output for analog sets, which don't support HDMI.
That means you'll be able to watch full-res output if you hook up your
Blu-ray player to your old display, rather than the 960x540 that could
be outputted using the Image Constraint Token. While we're a little
surprised that Sony would actually come out and do something so
consumer-friendly, we're not that shocked. After all, the number of
people with analog HD sets is relatively small compared to the overall
market, Sony's piracy concerns have to do with digital copying, and, of
course, Sony's in a battle for market share, and if this is a way to
win a few more customers over to the Blu-ray camp, they're gonna do it.

WOW masser af updates!
Endeligt er det officielt! ØV!!!!!!
New details are coming in from Sony's open press March 15th event.
First and foremost we have learned that Sony will be doing a worldwide
launch in November 2006. This includes the US, Japan, and Europe.
In addition, they aim to release 6 Million units by 12/31/2006 and aim
to release 2 Million units per month starting in January 2007.
* Update - We have learned that Japan will be receiving their initial
PS3 shipments in the first 10 days of November 2006. No further
word on US or Europe.
* Update - We have learned that the 6 Million units information was
initially misunderstood. The 6 Million units was in relation to
their 2006 Fiscal Year which ends on March 31st 2007.
fra http://www.ps3portal.com/general/article/311.html
---------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------
Sony has revealed the reason behind the PS3 delays. It is due to
the Blu-Ray copy protection system not being finalized. In other
words, DRM has caused the PS3 delay.
On the bright side, this is the likely reason why we will see 6 Million
PS3's this year, Four times the Xbox360's that Microsoft shipped in
2005 at their WorldWide launch

og PS3 får HDMI 1.3
Kutaragi made it official when he announced the addition of the
cutting edge HDMI technology. Improvements over older HMDI are
numerous:
*
Higher speed: Though HDMI has more than twice the bandwidth needed
to support all HDTV formats, HDMI will increase its single-link
bandwidth to support the demands of future HD display devices, such as
higher resolutions, deep color and high frame rates.
*
Deep color: HDMI will support 30-bit, 36-bit and 48-bit color
depths for stunning rendering of over one billion colors in
unprecedented detail.
*
Greater PC/CE convergence: HDMI will be enhanced for easier
integration into low voltage, AC-coupled PC graphics controllers,
cementing HDMI’s position as the de facto standard digital multimedia
interface enabling true convergence across PC and CE platforms. The
HDMI Founders also support compatibility between HDMI and the Unified
Display Interface (UDI), the HDMI-compatible digital video interface
for PC displays announced recently by a group of leading PC technology
makers.
*
New mini connector: With small portable devices such as HD
camcorders and still cameras demanding seamless HDTV connectivity, HDMI
will offer a new, smaller form-factor connector option. Since HDMI
offers the highest quality digital audio and video on a single
connection, such devices will be also benefit from a reduced connector
count.
*
Lip Sync: CE devices are employing increasingly complex digital
signal processing of high-resolution video and audio formats to enhance
the clarity and detail of the content. As a result, synchronization of
video and audio in user devices has become a greater challenge and
could potentially require complex end-user adjustments. HDMI will
incorporate features to enable this synchronization to be done
automatically by the devices with greater accuracy.
*
New compressed audio formats: In addition to HDMI’s current
ability to support high-bandwidth uncompressed digital audio and all
currently-available compressed formats (such as Dolby Digital and DTS),
HDMI will add additional support for new compressed digital audio
formats Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD.

Toshiba HD-(X)A1 can do 1080p
Posted on AVS by Robert who is a dealer for HD-dvd.
"Thanks Peter. Last week a very reliable technical source told me that
HD DVD will output 1080p by the end of this year. My source told me the
HD-A1 and HD-XA1 firmware would be upgraded via the broadband
connection to accommodate 1080p output. I took his info with a grain of
salt.
However, when Peter visited me today the question of 1080p came up and
I told him what I was told. Peter asked me for a flashlight and looked
on the front panel display and low and behold Toshiba included 1080p on
the display so the player is 1080p ready."
