After using Audyssey exclusively now for around seven months, I only grow to appreciate it more every day. At the very beginning when I first got my AVP (over a year now) I was listening to my system the way I always had, using an SPL meter and test tones to calibrate. At the time I thought it sounded pretty darn good, and I thought how can it get any better than this?
And then I started reading about how Audyssey made a good sounding system sound even better. I was a little nervous about jumping into this, as I had zero experience with any system as complex as Audyssey. Then I just said what the heck and just did it. Unfortunately my first, second, and even third attempts did not wow me the way I had hoped it would.
I was like "this sucks!" and then just went back and using my trusty old SPL meter in hand, once again manually calibrated each channel using the AVP's test tone generator. Than many many months passed and I once again figured I'd give it another shot. This time I had the handy Audyssey setup instructions giomania provided for us.

With tripod and mic in hand I went at it. Following the placement pattern tips from pers1, and the recommendations by giomania on mic height positioning, this calibration run was leaps and bounds better than before. At that point I knew that Audyssey was the real deal.
And as good as it was sounding I figured I could make it even better. So I decided to run it again. This time I varied the height on the mic just a bit. The results were nothing short of astonishing! I was like dang! this sounds freakin' amazing! And I left it that way untouched until I got my second Martin Logan Descent subwoofer. I pretty much had it sounding as close to perfect as I could using MultEQ XT (I know results would be even better with Audyssey Pro).
It was sounding so sweet that I was almost afraid to mess with it, but I knew I had to since I now had 2 identical subs on opposite sides of the room. That and the fact that I was now using 2 dedicated sub pre outs instead of one (both XLR).
Well thankfully that Audyssey run was a smashing success. And I nailed it the first try this time. And from that point I haven't had to re-run it. The sound of Audyssey when watching movies on Blu-ray, HD DVD, DVD, and satellite brings a smile to my face every time.

I now know why so many people brag on what Audyssey can do. It is an amazing technological achievement in room calibration. It is something that I can't recommend highly enough for AVP owners to do, as once it's dialed in properly the results are jaw dropping!
And another Audyssey feature that I am just loving the heck out of is Dynamic Volume. I know that many of you only use this feature for TV watching, but for me it has done wonders with movie soundtracks. No more needing to have to constantly raise and lower the volume during action movies. And by having Dynamic Volume to "Day" setting, I have noticed no penalty in resolution, or dynamics. Dialog is crystal clear all the time now with every movie I watch and all the rest of the soundfield is never overpowering but always very enveloping with plenty of punch.
I leave Audyssey (MultEQ XT, Dynamic EQ, and Dynamic Volume) on all the time for movie and TV watching. And about the only thing I don't use Audyssey for is music playback, but that's another story

.
Sorry for this long post on my growing appreciation for Audyssey, but after watching Transporter 3 on Blu-ray and having its 7.1 DTS-HD MA soundtrack totally knock my socks off I just had to share how much I am enjoying Audyssey.
