Med cover af bla. Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, C.C.R. John Shank producere.

Rod Stewart is about to come out of the Great American Songbook into the book of great songs -- rock songs, that is. Stewart has been working in Los Angeles with Grammy-winning producer John Shanks, recording a set of covers that includes Bob Seger's "Still the Same," Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Have You Ever Seen the Rain?," Elvin Bishop's "Fooled Around and Fell in Love," and songs by Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, and Van Morrison. There's no word yet on when the album will be out, but it marks the first time since 1998's When We Were The New Boys, another covers set, that Stewart has worked in the rock field.

The Seger cover is particularly ironic since the two singers famously tussled over Tom Waits' "Downtown Train" in the late '80s. Seger claimed that a record company executive who knew of Seger's plans to record the song gave Stewart the idea to record it himself. Stewart's version appeared on his 1989 box set Storyteller: The Complete Anthology.

Stewart's studio band for these sessions includes guitarists Tim Pierce and Dean Parks, bassist Leland Sklar, keyboardist Jamie Mahobrec, and drummer Kenny Aronoff.

Stewart's last four albums have been collections of old-time pop standards, all of which have hit the Billboard Top Five.

Rod Stewart Returns To Rock On New Album

July 21, 2006, 3:15 PM ET

Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.

Rod Stewart is retiring his series of standards albums and returning to the rock and roll of his roots. Due Oct. 10 via J, "Still the Same ... Great Rock Classics of Our Time" will feature such tracks as John Fogerty's "Have You Ever Seen the Rain," Elvin Bishop's "Fooled Around and Fell in Love" and Bob Dylan's "If Not for You."

The album is being co-produced by BMG North America chairman Clive Davis and John Shanks (Sheryl Crow, Ashlee Simpson). Other cuts being eyed for the collection include Bob Seger's "Still the Same," Bonnie Tyler's "It's a Heartache" and Van Morrison's "Crazy Love."

Stewart's four volumes in the "Great American Songbook" series have sold a staggering 8.3 million copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Elvin Bishop was born in Glendale, CA, on October 21, 1942. He grew up on a farm in Iowa with no electricity and no running water. His family moved to Oklahoma when he was ten. Raised in an all-White community, he had no exposure to Blacks or their music except though the radio where he would listen to sounds from far away Mexico and blues stations in Shreveport, LA, in particular, the piercing sound of Jimmy Reed's harmonica got his attention. Bishop says it was like a crossword puzzle that he had to figure out. What is this music? Who makes it? Where and how do Black people live? What is this music all about? He put the pieces together.

But it was not until he won a National Merit Scholarship to the University of Chicago in 1959 that he found the real answers to his questions. Suddenly, there he was right in the heart of the Chicago blues scene. Live. It was a dream come true. "The first thing I did when I got there was to make friends with the black guys working in the cafeteria. They took me to all the clubs. I sunk myself totally in the blues life as quick as I could," says Bishop.

After two years of college, he just dropped out and was into music full time. Howlin' Wolf guitarist Smokey Smothers befriended Bishop and taught him the basics of blues guitar. In the early '60s he met and teamed up with Paul Butterfield to become the core of the Butterfield Blues Band. Although only playing guitar for a few years, he practiced day and night on the blues music that he loved. He and Butterfield played together in just about every place possible — campuses, houses, parks, and clubs. They began to become well known in 1963 when they took a job at Big John's on Chicago's North Side and the Paul Butterfield Blues Band was born. Bishop helped to create and played on the first several Butterfield albums. (The Pigboy Crabshaw is Bishop's countrified persona referred to in the title of the third Butterfield album.)

When he left the Butterfield band after the In My Own Dream album (1968), Bishop relocated to and settled in the San Francisco area where he appeared often at the Filmore with artists like Eric Clapton, B. B. King, and Jimi Hendrix. He recorded for Epic (four albums) and later signed with Capricorn in 1974. His recording of "Traveling Shoes" (from the album Let It Flow) hit the charts, but he scored big with the lovely tune "Fooled Around and Fell in Love" (from his album Struttin' My Stuff) in 1976. He was (and is) famous for having fun on stage (putting on a great show) and letting the good times roll. Over the next few years the Elvin Bishop Group dissolved. He released his album Best Of in 1979, and was not heard from much until he signed with Alligator in 1988.

Bishop then released Big Fun (1988) and Don't Let the Bossman Get You Down (1991), which were well received. He also participated in Alligator's 1992 20th Anniversary cross-country tour. His latest release is Ace in the Hole (1995). Over the years, Bishop has graced the albums of many great bluesmen including Clifton Chenier and John Lee Hooker. He toured with B.B. King in 1995. Bishop is known for his sense of humor, his unique style of slide guitar, and fusion of blues, gospel, R&B, and country flavors. He lives with his wife and family in the San Francisco area, is a prodigious gardener, and continues to play dates in the U.S. and abroad, issuing The Skin I'm In in 1998. The following year saw the release of Hometown Boy Makes Good and That's My Partner in 2000. After a five year hiatus, Bishop released Gettin' My Groove Back in 2005 on Blind Pig Records.

http://gossip.tv2.dk/article.php/id-4562862.html

Rod går direkte nr. 1 i USA med Still The Same

STILL THE SAME ... GREAT ROCK CLASSICS OF OUR TIME Enters the Charts at #1
Stewart's First Rock Album in 8 Years is a Triumphant Return to His Roots and His First #1 Rock Album Since 1979

NEW YORK, Oct. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- J Records recording artist Rod Stewart once again tops the charts with the release of his first rock album in 8 years, STILL THE SAME ... GREAT ROCK CLASSICS OF OUR TIME entering the Billboard 200 Album chart at #1 on a first week Nielsen SoundScan total of 184,304 copies sold. It was 35 years ago this week that Rod enjoyed his first #1 album "Every Picture Tells A Story," which features Stewart's signature track "Maggie May," and this is his first rock album to hold the top spot since "Blondes Have More Fun" in 1979 (Stardust ... The Great American Songbook Volume III entered the charts at #1 and was his first #1 since "Blondes Have More Fun"). "STILL THE SAME ... " is Stewart's 35th charting album, his fourth #1 album, his sixth Top 10 debut, and his 4th consecutive studio album to enter the Billboard charts within the top 2 positions. Rod Stewart joins Garth Brooks and Jay-Z who are the only recording artists in the SoundScan era to have 4 releases debut in the top 2 positions within 3 years

STILL THE SAME ... GREAT ROCK CLASSICS OF OUR TIME comes on the heels of the unprecedented success of the four volumes that comprise Stewart's Grammy- award winning Great American Songbook series (J Records), a musical and cultural phenomenon and the biggest selling ongoing series of new music recordings in history, with a total of fifteen million copies sold worldwide in just 4 years.

Comments Clive Davis, Chairman and CEO of BMG U.S.: "The last four years with Rod's five albums have exceeded any fantasy. It's what makes this business exhilarating, unpredictable and totally fulfilling. It's a milestone neither of us will ever forget."

Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Rod Stewart has been lauded as having one of the greatest and most distinctive rock voices in history. He has also been hailed as having one of the great interpretive voices in popular music. STILL THE SAME ... GREAT ROCK CLASSICS OF OUR TIME is an incredibly strong and passionate return to form. Stewart takes ownership of these thoughtfully selected tracks crafted by some of the best songwriters of our time, including Bob Dylan ("If Not For You"), Van Morrison ("Crazy Love"), Bob Seger ("Still the Same") and John Fogerty ("Have You Ever Seen the Rain" which was the #1 most added single at the AC radio format 3 weeks in a row). Several of Stewart's other selections sound like they were written for his signature, inimitable rasp in the first place, like Bonnie Tyler's "It's a Heartache" and "Fooled Around and Fell in Love," a 1976 hit for Elvin Bishop.

The album's sensational entry at # 1 was propelled by an intense month of television, online and radio exposure that built on the popularity of his best-selling Songbook series. Stewart kicked off his television appearances on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," followed by "Good Morning America," "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," "CBS Sunday Morning," "The View," "A&E Biography," "CBS Early Show," "Dancing With The Stars," "Jimmy Kimmel," "Martha Stewart," "Rachael Ray Show," and multiple appearances on "Entertainment Tonight," "Access Hollywood," "Extra," "CNN Showbiz Tonight," and "E! News Live." Stewart also performed at an intimate sold-out concert at the Nokia Theatre in Times Square which was broadcast live by Control Room on MSN.com and into 116 National CineMedia movie theatres across the country on the eve of album release. The concert was also broadcast on Premiere Radio stations across the country and on New York's WLTW Lite-FM. The album also enjoyed an exclusive Sneak Peak Clear Channel online album premiere. The first single from the album "Have You Ever Seen The Rain" was the # 1 most added single at the Hot AC format 3 weeks in a row.

Produced by John Shanks (winner of the 2005 "Producer of the Year" Grammy award) and co-produced by Clive Davis (Grammy-winning co-producer of Santana's Supernatural), STILL THE SAME ... GREAT ROCK CLASSICS OF OUR TIME features a lean band of top notch session musicians including Kenny Aronoff and Dean Parks. The versatility of its production is displayed in songs ranging from the soaring Badfinger hit "Day After Day" to the most contemporary song included, the Pretenders's 1994 ballad "I'll Stand By You."
